The Killers | Somebody Told Me

A Barrier Junkies favorite; can you believe that this was released 10 years ago? Feelin’ old, but this song is timeless.

Ben Howard | Conrad

Ben Howard just released the official audio of Conrad; a new song from his upcoming album I Forget Where We Were. His new album is set to be released October 21st. Between Conrad and I Forget Where We Were, I think we can expect another stellar album.

You can pre-order I Forget Where We Were here.

Lo-Fang | Every Night

Check out Every Night, a new song from Lo-Fang. His debut album Blue Film, is available now.

Manchester Orchestra New Album & Tour

Yesterday Manchester Orchestra released a re-imagined version of last year’s album COPE; HOPE features new versions of each song from Cope. It’s a very cool concept and I love the slowed down acoustic versions. In honor of HOPE, Manchester Orchestra will be touring in small, intimate, venues this winter! Click here for ticket info!

HOPE is available on iTunes now, with rumors of the vinyl being released in mid November.

New Music Tuesday - September 16th, 2014

While we are recovering from last week’s mega release day, we are taking it slow here at Barrier Junkies, with two great releases!

Sir Sly - You Haunt Me

You Haunt Me is a solid debut from Sir Sly. Although we’ve already heard the first 5/6 songs from their EP Gold, the new material really rounds out the album. Out of the new material, Inferno, shows the most potential.

Nick Mulvey - First Mind

I came across Nick Mulvey on a late night Spotify hunt for new artists to check out. I fell in love with his unique, rhythmic guitar parts and layered vocal style. This album provides a perfect soundtrack for a relaxed Sunday drive.

Artist To Watch - Brika

Miami artist, managed under Art House Records, Brika takes a background of diverse influences to her unique sound and singer-songwriter work.  With hints of Alternative music and Jazz, R&B -especially in her vocal- and Latin influences, Brika creates a sound that could fit perfectly in the NPR Tiny Desk or a corner coffeeshop, while also filling bigger show venues with a strong persona and full, assertive voice.

While Brika has only yet released three songs, I have been obsessing over them all since IndieShuffle tweeted and posted about her newest release, Options, the smooth, jazzy, cyclical groover that builds the entire song without reaching a point of excess or indulgence.  Options feels as though the simplicity in Brika’s songwriting comes from an effortless, natural chip off the young musician’s go-get-em charisma.

However, Brika’s first release, Mumbai, is definitely my favorite so far.  Another simple yet strong song, its pulsing beat and melody with chorus vocal riffs  move the listener steadily forward and craving more.  Mumbai also pulls clear influences from Miami’s Latin music scenes.  Mumbai is the gentle yet articulate R&B Samba that will teach you how to move those hips.

Follow Brika everywhere for the latest updates, great music, and hipster points!  She’s just on the brink of notice and surprisingly, her pages are not too busy yet - sure to change soon.  Get on this bandwagon, Brika will not disappoint!  Sounds like: Sara Bareilles, Ella Eyre, Jessie Ware.

Song of the Week - Love Lockdown by Glass Animals (Kanye Cover)

This week, Tuesday, September 9th, LA and Michael went to the Glass Animals show at The Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, MN.  The show was incredible and an absolute highlight was their cover of Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” during their encore!  Listen to the track below, watch them cover it live on Triple J’s Like a Version, and watch this really probably NSFW fan-made(?) sultry music video too.  We can’t get enough of this cover!
